Comment: We booked a room on the Aberdeen – Shetland Northlink ferry. I found the staff to be very nice and the accommodations very well priced. For just an extra 5 pounds you can even get a view from your room. The food was only okay though, but I loved all the emphasis on local sourcing. You got the impression that they took a lot of pride in their work which is great.

Comment: We booked the Northlink Ferry for our trip to Shetlands. First, would recommend a cabin if possible. These book out quickly so you will need to book early. If you miss out on a cabin there is a waiting list, people will cancel their trips so you might get lucky. The cabin also includes entry to a separate lounge, with breakfast included. The weather can be rough between the mainland and islands. Apparently, if there are slip mats on the tables when you board it will be an interesting night trip.

Comment: I sailed from Lerwick to Aberdeen. I’d have preferred a 2-share cabin but it was not available. The 4-share cabin was tight but expected. Kettle jug and coffee/tea provided. Bath towel provided too. Bathroom was very clean, water warm/hot. Our crossing was quite smooth despite strong winds. We were informed to come earlier, leaving 30 minutes before scheduled. The breakfast was very good. Less than perfect were the staff at both terminals who were impatient although not outright rude. Pricing I believe in quite reasonable. Bookings can be made online and ticket collected just prior to departure using a number.

Comment: Arrived Aberdeen on North Link ferries from Lerwick via Kirkwall. Great ferries, smaller than Stena Lines which do the Europe mainland to UK, but big in overall comfort and experience, despite smaller cabins.
Friendly, caring and professional crew on the ferry make it an overall delightful experience. The Magnus lounge is well equipped with magazines, newspaper, complimentary teas, coffee, water, drinks and fruits. Access is per upgraded cabin, a few extra pounds that gives you a kettle and tea / coffee facilities in the cabin. We thought the convenience was worth the extra cost. The Magnus lounge was a bonus.
The restricted entry Lounge shares the kitchen with the main dining area, for the same prices. Good choice of menu with vegetarian and vegan options also available. Good quality and generously proportioned food.
Since the ferry turnaround is not till evening, they give you an extra hour to disembark after docking in port.
There’s luggage trolleys provided for foot passengers as soon as you exit the ferry, and the lift to the terminal is right there, if you prefer not to take the stairs.
Definitely a better option to flying, as you have the choice to take your car with you. Great for traveling, and exploring in your own.

Comment: Northlink Ferries! What a fantastic trip to Orkney. Boarding process super easy, you can check in your luggage so you don’t have to bother with it on board.
Little shop on the ferry for souvenirs, drinks and snacks. Cafeteria serves good food. Pods are a great way to travel, super comfy and cosy.
Wonderful journey!
