Comment: We used the La Paz to Mazatlan overnight service. Our first crossing (9th April) was cancelled due to a breakdown, the next available sailing with a cabin was the 27th April. We had to stay an additional 3 weeks in La Paz.
The boarding process is complicated – vehicle is measured, weighed then you park up & queue for the ticket office, even if you have an online ticket (which we had). During these processes you are given various bits of paper – hang on to them! Then you drive towards the boat, park up again and wait for the staff to take some of the papers, wait again to be called onto the boat. For some reason we were parked in amongst the lorries on the ship. The walk to the reception/ restaurant/ cabins is long, involving many many steps.
The cabin itself was large, clean and comfortable. We had a welcome lukewarm shower. No US / Mexican power sockets (it’s an old Stena Line ferry with European sockets!), luckily we had a European plug adapter so my husband could use his CPAP machine.
A meal is supplied which was OK.
Crossing was calm.
Disembarkation was chaotic. Only the drivers were allowed onto the car / lorry deck. My husband had to squeeze between filthy lorries to get back to our vehicle – I’ve got to try to get the road grime out of all his clothes.
He saw a lorry driver crawling on his hands and knees underneath the lorries to get to his cab.
As a car passenger I was sent to a waiting area off the ship and then directed to baggage claim which I didn’t need. Luckily our phones worked (we charged them from the USB on the television in the cabin). We were able to be reunited but it was highly stressful, especially for my husband.
It’s a partly digital (booking) but very much an analog service.
It got us to our destination.

Comment: Wonderful experience travelling as a family of three with a toddler on Baja Ferries and that’s down to the hardworking and very attentive staff!!!

Shout out to all the workers on the ferry from Mazatlán to La Paz on Sunday night 27th/28th August. Such as Liliana, Rosario, Andreas and co (we tried to get everyone’s name but cannot remember). But honestly, everyone deserves 5*

They were so sweet with our little one, spoke English when they could (and really didn’t have to), they took good care of us making sure we knew where to go and what to do/what our ticket included etc.

From the moment we checked our bags on, to the minute we arrived in Baja we felt so comfortable, cared for, and had the best conversations with the Baja team. And for that alone we will be taking the ferry via this route back!!

We really want to encourage the Baja management team to take a moment to appreciate their staff because they truly deserve it.

The facilities were great, toilets were clean and we were comfortable (even sleeping on the floor) and appreciated the blanket for our toddler. Lights out and TV off by 9pm and everyone respected each other so there was no noise or issues.

Our only complaint was the food. There are no meat-free options which is fine as we came prepared with our own meal. There was a salad bar with what looked like plenty of veggie options but unfortunately there were only scraps left and they couldn’t refill. So more to the salad bar as obviously it’s a popular choice!!!

Anyway, very happy to give such a high rating. But again, all down to the staff!!

Comment: It will cost you around $600usd both ways, with a 4 bed cabin and a vehicle. I suggest that you do take the cabin, or you will be tired. There is a bar and you get two free meals and drinks. They do have simple shows/dj. On the way to La Paz ferry leaves around 4pm so you slerp the night. Arrive latest 1:30pm if you need to do the paperwork. Weigh vehicle and get boarding pass. Update 2023: more expensive and quality gone down a bit. My cabin was missing a simple plug MX, room run down. And there were bedbugs.

Comment: Ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan was enjoyable. There was some confusion but that’s probably just user error on my part (I don’t speak the best spanish). Watching the sailors launch the boat and then dock the next morning was very entertaining. Dinner was fine, there was no milk for coffee in the morning so I didn’t have any. There are two bars and karaoke at night which is fun with people who have been drinking all night.
