Comment: Lake Atitlan has lovely towns and villages all along the shore, each with a unique character. Ride the public ferry and meet locals and backpackers who have stories and travel information to share. Plan plenty of time for transit and know that mid afternoon is when the lake is roughest. Seats in the middle of the ferry offer the smoothest ride. Our first trip, we had to ask where we were at each stop but everyone was helpful.

Comment: The road network around the lake does not run close the edge of the lake, so road transport can take a long time to get around the towns of the lake.
The boats/ferry’s can save considerable time to get between the towns (and lost piers along the way).
The prices are meant to be set for each journey between the towns but the ‘Captains’ may try to charge you more.
Between San Pedro and Pana it should be no more than 25Q therefore less for shorter journeys.
Ask for the price before going on the boat and haggle.
You will need cash and the correct change.
The captains are not the best a providing a comfortable journey, the lake can look calm but at the speed they go, it can get bouncy and the seats are not cushioned.
Sit towards the back for a better journey.
The piers are not the easiest to get onto, due to the height difference of the boat and deck!

Comment: Boats come in and out often. Fare is Q25 to San Pedro, Q20 to San Marcos, and Q10 to Tzununa. The farther you sit in the back- the smoother the ride. You can get all around the lake in these launches. Pretty fun way to get around and much faster then taking the road.
