Comment: The Auckland CBD Ferry Terminal [Downtown Ferry Terminal], is the centre or the pivotal hub of the Auckland ferry network. It connects the Auckland CBD with suburbs in North Shore, West Auckland, and South Auckland, and many islands in the Hauraki Gulf. The terminal is located at the north end of Queen Street, quite closer to Britomart, which is the hub of Auckland railways.
The ferry terminal consists of two main elements. A historical Edwardian Baroque building facing Queen Street and newer wharves and a waiting area buildings facing the Waitematā Harbour. The Edwardian building was designed similar to the San Francisco Ferry Building by Alex Wiseman (1865-1915) who also designed the Auckland Hospital at Grafton in 1893. The civil and marine contractors were Philcox and Sons. The building was completed in 1912, of sandstone and brick with a base of Coromandel granite, on a reclaimed land.
The new ferry building was constructed and opened in 1982.
