Comment: Pay on the spot in cash when entering the boat, the crew advice me to buy return ticket as it will be pack with tourist in morning. When i visit in June there wasn’t much tourist and i’m staying overnight. Along the boat ride the view was amazing.

Comment: Quite scenic ferry ride. They have the schedule posted on the dock. Cash only, with no ATM on the side where you get off the train, so make sure to get cash beforehand. We paid €14 for 2 people, one way (may 2024). One guy was super nice but other guy had attitude. We found most people in Hallstatt to be rude.

Comment: 14€ to Hallstatt and back for two adults. ONLY CASH!
We didn’t have it but as an exception they agreed that I take out cash in the city and pay when I return, they held my ID as a deposit. It worked well and we were happy. In the boat station there’s nothing to do if you have no cash, wait for next train back. So be prepared!

Comment: Cash only. €3.50 one way, as of April 2024.
If you don’t have cash, the nearest town is Obertraun (35mins walk), for which the woman running the boat service will gleefully tell you when you ask where abouts it is: “You walk there” whilst demonstrating walking with her fingers.
In fact, you’d be better off getting the bus from Obertraun (takes about 15 mins from there) or walking from Hallstatt Railway Station to the town itself, via Obertraun and the lake. It takes about 90mins (there’s a footpath all the way there and it’s a beautiful walk).
Don’t give your money to the boat people. They clearly have a problem with tourists and bring an attitude to show it. They accept USD $10 and GBP £10 but you won’t get change because, as the sign says: “We are not a bank!”.
If you don’t take card payment, there’s no need to be rude and condescending about it.
If you don’t like your job, then don’t do it. There’s no need to be rude and condescending to tourists who are bringing money into your town.

Comment: I didn’t realize that I needed cash to pay for the boat trip. Fortunately there was a fellow Malaysian in front of me in the queue willing to pay for me and my wife boat trip. I paid her back later by transferring money using MAE. All was good and saved me a 20 mins walk to the nearest ATM.
