Comment: Used Water Jets International from Chetumal (Mexico) to San Pedro because the land route alternative seemed quite complicated, potential to be scammed by border officials and locals and significantly longer. We arrived 2hrs early (~450MXN from Yak Hostel I’m Bacalar to the Marina) as the ticket says and got drinks/coffee from the nearby Oxxo. Comparing against other reviews:
– the ocean was flat-calm so smooth crossing (we were lucky), although popped a travel-pill
– not too hot because windows were open, so a cross breeze
– had a toilet onboard
– we were expecting to be scammed by that immigration tourist tax scam (see Reddit for Belize-Mexico border stories), so we had the e-receipts and were prepared for war but the guy was fine. Unfortunately we slipped up because UK Nationals using the electric gate need a physical printed tourist form not just the small 3D barcode printout, so we had to ask Waterjets to print it out for us (20MXN fee).
– The main bad thing came from Waterjets didn’t tell us of their “check-in” step, even though 5 of us arrived early, gave our bags and were counted and acknowledged by their staff. But we hadn’t “checked in” so didn’t have their passes and also meant they hadn’t checked us for the tax form. The lady was frustrated because this was 10mins before boarding but it all came from no sign and no mention of that specific step, otherwise it would be 5stars

Comment: Good service and easy process. Arrive at least an hour before departure (more to be safe). Tickets can be purchased before departure.

Comment: Three stars because we did eventually get to Chetumal close to the estimated time. There is just so much room for improvement from this company. The policy requiring you to be there 2 hours before departure in Caye Caulker is ridiculous, especially considering their boat is routinely 1 hour late. The boat was fine, but how hard would it be to add ventilation scoops on the top to bring some air in? The inside of the boat was suffocating, despite the fact that there was air that could have been circulating through the cabin. As others have mentioned, there are mosquitoes everywhere, and the boat is frequently full. I guess they can’t control how slow belize immigration and customs are, but that part is also laughably slow.

Comment: I was really wary given previous reviews but decided to give the ferry crossing a go and had absolutely no problems! They are very responsive on whatsapp in case you have any questions and the process is really easy. Suggestions would be to: buy your tickets at least 24 advance online (or in person if you’re already in Chetumal) and arrive 2 hours/1hr 45 mins before departure. Our journey in case helpful:
– We left Tulum at 1am on an ADO bus to Chetumal.
– Arrived at the bus station in Chetumal at 5.30am, decided to hang around there until it was light as there was a security guard. There were taxi’s there from 5.30am though.
– Got a taxi for 100pesos to the dock in Chetumal
– Arrived at 7.45am ready for check-in to open at 8am. Everything is very well sign posted and there is a security guard there who was happy to confirm we were at the right desk etc.
– Check in took 5 minutes, then we waited a until 9am for our bags to be checked through & for immigration leaving Mexico.
– Got on the boat at 9.45am, left at 10am. The boat is small & enclosed with no air conditioning but the windows are open so the breeze cools everything down. The trip is crazy bumpy but thats just so be expected – take a sea sickness pill!
– Arrived San Pedro at 11am. It was a very easy border process to enter Belize.
– Got back on the boat to Caye Caulker & arrived at 12noon.

Comment: I was very sceptical about using this company as the reviews weren’t great, but everything turned out fine.
They say you need to turn up 2 hours before departure, but they have a sign up in Chetumal saying check-in closes 1 hour before departure, so realistically you could arrive 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour beforehand. It just depends how busy it is.
I was there in the off season, so it wasn’t so busy.
It departed on time. Beware, it is a very bumpy ride! I took a sea sickness pill beforehand just in case and glad I did because the boat is bashing against the water underneath constantly.
It was nice and breezy on board because there are windows and they had the doors open. There were no mosquitos in the boat (unlike some other reviews I read).
The migration process was smooth on both sides.
Overall, my experience with the company was very good and it was an easy way to get between Mexico and the Belize islands for cheaper than flying.
