Comment: We arrived from Australia with 36 degrees to be greeted by minus 12 as we took the ferry from the harbour over to Suomenlinna Island. There are very nice sites on the way not the least the ice surrounding our ferry. A vast change from Brisbane’s hot summer.

Comment: Took this boat to the amazing fortress island.
Wasn’t packed and we saw a car sailing to the island!
There are heated rooms with windows as well, but standing there and watching the ice break under the ship is amazing!

Comment: Took the ferry from here to Suomalinna in late morning. It was packed to the brim. Go up to the deck for a breathtaking view. But be forewarned, it gets bone-chilling cold as the ferry sails. If you prefer it warmer, head below deck. It is heated.

For details on prices and schedules, check “suomalinna.fi” or “hsl.fi”. Alternatively, info is also available at the pier. Service is quite frequent and takes approximately 15min to reach the island.

It feels totally different during summertime, so it is definitely worthwhile to pay a second visit.

Comment: This is where you board the public ferry to Suomenlinna Island and the Fortress. The ferry comes every 20 minutes and you can board it with the HSL public transport ticket. Quite a straightforward process, just follow the crowd and you’re fine.

Comment: Experience a classic Finnish market with vendors offering authentic local food and gifts. This spot also serves as a charming departure point for boat excursions to nearby islands in Helsinki. Indulging in a bowl of salmon soup and a refreshing beverage is the ideal way to savor a summer day.
