Comment: I went to Daufuskie Island in June for vacation, enlisting Lowcountry Ferry transport Co. I noticed several dogs inside air-conditioned cabin. I recommended this ferry to my sister when she went last wk. She was denied entry to air-conditioned cabin even tho temps were in mid-90s (if not service dog, allergies were the concern ?!?) On return trip, she explained her dog had not yet completed certification which was why she didn’t request on trip to island. She was again denied…and mocked. Her options were to sit sternside and inhale diesel fumes w/no airflow OR sit atop with no shade for the HOUR-long trip. Pet owners: there are other several other companies. Do your homework.

Comment: This was our first trip to Dafuskie Island and went with the lowcountry ferry for getting back and forth. We had four adults, two children, and a dog with us. We arrived early like stated and the ferry was not there and we were unsure of what to do so I called and Megan answered and explained they would be back soon and that we were in the right place. I had talked to Megan twice previous to our trip for tips on luggage and parking and she was super helpful each time. It was really hot outside both days we traveled and they allowed our dog and many others to sit inside. The other crew was super helpful with luggage and making sure we had everything. I only had to pay extra for a huge page of groceries and it was only $30. We plan to come back and will use the Lowcountry ferry again.

Comment: We took the Buckingham Landing ferry back in 2022 and decided to come back to Dafuskie Island this year (2024). I was researching about the new ferry operation and hesitant to book based on reviews. We decided the ferry was the best option as a family of 5 staying for a week. Low Country Ferry exceeded our expectations! Everyone was very friendly and helpful getting us on and off the ferry. The ferry was clean, air conditioned inside with restrooms. As far as the speed, ferries typically move slow, so we just sat back and enjoyed the ride and the views of the water from the top deck. When you arrive at the dock in Hilton Head there is a tent setup, nobody arrives to direct you until about 15-20 minutes before, so we just grabbed a wagon and loaded our stuff and waited to be directed what to do. A sign at the tent with information on how the process works may be helpful to someone riding the ferry for the first time. Our kids love Dafuskie Island and we will be back next summer!

Comment: There are so many problems with this new ferry service, it’s hard to know where to begin. The previous operator provided stellar service. This operator offered a low-ball bid to the county, and got the contract. But you get what you pay for! There are nonstop complaints from locals and visitors about a substandard vessel, long rides, high cargo fees, and unsafe conditions. There are concerns by the state’s disability rights organization, and nightmarish stories from people who attempt to take their pets onboard and find inhumane conditions. Fortunately, there are a variety of quality water taxi options from both Hilton Head/Bluffton and Savannah.

Comment: This is our second trip to Daufuskie. Two years ago, there was a different operator running the ferry service from Bluffton. I knew the operator was changed but went in with an open mind. It became quickly evident this would be a very different experience. We arrived 40 minutes ahead of scheduled departure to an empty tent. No instructions about luggage or the like were posted or otherwise communicated. The only bathrooms are port-a-johns in the sun. Around 30 minutes later, the boat and crew arrive to help direct. There are some small wagons for moving your luggage to the boat. Those were locked up when we arrive. It took a couple trips to get a week’s worth of supplies loaded. Then you stand around, uncovered, waiting for the crew to weigh your baggage and ring you up. WAY more expensive than before! WAY. Further, it seems to be charged based on who is working when you board. A couple of friends came later in the week and they had similar containers for which they weren’t charged. If you are traveling with a dog, you either sit up top or at the back in a very narrow walkway. We sat in the back because there was a passenger with a dog sitting up top. She didn’t have her dog leashed and nobody seemed to think that could be a problem so I just waited to load. Be careful when boarding as the ramp used is sketchy and I noticed several older travelers stumble over it. Thankfully, they didn’t fall all the way down (or off the boat and into the drink). The ride was pretty slow, slowing to something of a stop if other boats passed, creating a wake. The trip took just over an hour. Be careful when getting off at the dock. The ramp is even less steady and the dock surface is rotting and patched up.
Recommendations, IMO:
1. Don’t pack food for meals. Just eat out. The luggage charges make it not worth it.
2. Watch your step.
3. If you have a dog, might be a good idea to look for water taxi options. But, that’s just me. I advocate for my dog and I don’t trust other dog owners to control their dogs. A boat is NOT a place where I’d want to have a reactive dog situation.
4. I love Daufuskie, and the trip has been great but, you might want to go elsewhere until they have this whole ferry deal figured out. It really was pretty dang sketch and I’m not a person to think that way. Had I known, I probably would have gone to Edisto, Harbour, or Fripp Island.
Not looking forward to the trip back.
