Comment: The road and bays in front of the terminal and then through to the dockside are dated as are the fences that seperate parts of the dock area, it looks tired and all a bit temporary. There are four lanes opening to five past the main terminal building.

The terminal building is modern, with toilets and comfy seating, plus an information area on places to visit in Normandy.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, both in the main terminal building and at the check-in booths of which there were two open when we visited.

We took our dog with us. Her papers were checked at the DFDS check-in booth. Oddly enough, our passports weren’t checked at the port by UK border force, so presumably they’ll be checked, along with our dog papers, once we land in France.

Nice and smooth check-in and boarding, So smooth in fact our 11am sailing left twelve minutes early. So whilst the port looks old it’s functional and gets the job done. Also as its not a massively busy port, with two daily crossings fron October it’s not overly busy and is quite relaxed.

The small car park at the front, for early arrivals or motorhomers wasn’t full when we arrived. There were several signs stating a £5 charge plus a fine for non-payment or failure to display a valid ticket. I tried to check in the terminal building but as we arrived at 11.20pm it was closed. I checked with a security guard and he explained that as long as we were travelling with DFDS then we’d probably be OK, which we were.

Comment: I was pretty pleased to see that they had cleaned up the rubbish tip that used to be seen when departing or arriving in to Newhaven. The location of the port ferry to the Newhaven Town train station is perfect. It’s so convenient.

Comment: Very relaxed and easy to check in and board the ferry compared to Dover, our choice of port for crossing the channel from now on. Customs and vehicle searches seem more personal and a lot less rushed.

Easy access to local roads and amenities including Sainsbury’s for fuel. 100% recommend. Gives a gentler arrival and onward travel process than Dover so ideal if first time driving in the UK.
