Comment: Extremely rude “Welcome” Center staff. More like an “Unwelcome, go away, get out of my face” Center.
As another user said, it was like waking a troll from under a bridge.
The Washington Island About page says “First of all, relax . . . you’re on an island, away from it all, one of the few places where you can really slow down, take it easy and smell the roses.” That’s what we came here to do, just relax, maybe ride some UTVs, and admire the flowers.
Staff at the welcome center told us to leave, said we were running out of time to do anything, and insisted we just call her if we had questions, but the visitor map didn’t even have the right phone number to call. Then she made fun of us for not having the right phone number. Then she didn’t tell us where the right phone number is. Then she angrily pointed to “things to do” on the map, but everything on the map was in orange… so we could have just never talked to her, and we still would have had the same information without the poor attitude.
I worked in hotels, resorts, book stores, gift shops, libraries, and my bosses would have SKINNED ME ALIVE if I ever talked to anyone the way she talked to us.
Go home if your back hurts. You don’t need to “welcome” anyone.
The entire rest of this island made up for the handful of rude people here. It was a feat.
The trick is keeping to yourself and not talking to anybody, because Wisconsin doesn’t REALLY want you here – they just want your money. They talk about you behind your back, but they don’t wait ’til you’re out of earshot first.
I don’t remember it being this bad when I was a kid. My partner is from this side of the state, and even he was appalled.
We’re “The Midwest” – I thought we were known for being kind.
The ferry was amazing and relaxing, but if I could give the Visitor’s Center 0 stars, I would.
Definitely take the ferry, if just for the ride alone! There’s plenty of beauty and peace here even without the attractions.

Comment: This A-hole was extremely rude to my 76 year old father! My dad was having trouble parking on the ferry and this d bag was a total jerk! If you can’t work with the public in a civil manner then get another job! Thankfully he wasn’t on our boat on the return trip.

Comment: Well maintained and manned information desk available. Great outdoors to spare time as we wait for the boat. Have a decent restroom. No food or snack options, not even a vending machine. Parking space might be an issue on a heavy rush day.

Comment: Rented bikes at 7 dollar in hour, not bad I thought. When we get back they charge us for the bike trailer my 2 year old used at $7 in hour… funny how it cost nothing for him to ride the ferry to and from the island..
